    Attached are links about bringing bikes on Amtrak trains, Metra suburban commuter trains, and CTA "L" trains. Students don’t need a car or truck to transport their bikes to/from their homes. Other commuter rail and rapid transit systems across the country have similar programs, but these are the ones specific to Illinois.

  4. Archived Info - Project Description

    Associated Project(s): 

    The Transportation iCAP Team is a team of faculty, staff and students who work to advance the 2015 iCAP transportation objectives. The team forms recommendations to reduce the 10% of campus emissions which are attributable to transportation. We address air travel emissions, fleet emissions, single-occupancy vehicle usage, renewable fuels, and active transportation.

    Based on FY14 data, transportation emissions have increased by 30% since the FY08 baseline.  Because emissions from the fleet and commuting are down by three and six percent, respectively, the increase in total transportation emissions is entirely due to a 52% increase in air travel emissions relative to FY08.

    Yes. I plan to continue.

     

    We will have a draft Biodiversity Plan to share with the resilience team when it is convenient. I need to review the recommendations that Gabe has pulled together. There is more introductory text and maps to written and made. Gabe wants to keep working on the plan as part of his grad school work so we will probably wait to call it done this time next year. But I do want to get feedback from the committee at some point.

  6. Upcoming sustainability events - August 2022

    The semester is right around the corner. Welcome back to campus! You are invited to several upcoming climate-related events:

    1. Let’s Talk about Sustainability: iSEE (Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment) is hosting a daily in-person gathering from 10-11 AM during the first week of the semester (August 22-26) in the South Lounge at the Illini Union. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided. Together, we will listen to a brief presentation by a subject-matter expert (agenda below), followed by an open discussion of ideas and questions from attendees. Stop by one morning - or each day next week - and help spread the word! This is a great opportunity to get connected, ask questions, network, and strengthen your interest in campus sustainability.
    • Monday 8/22: Meet iSEE/iCAP with campus sustainability staff
    • Tuesday 8/23: Plastic reduction with ISTC and Champaign County
    • Wednesday 8/24: Student involvement with SSLC (Student Sustainability Leadership Council)/SECs (Students for Environmental Concerns)
    • Thursday 8/25: Sustainable transportation (learn how to register your bike – and more!) with F&S and the Bike Center
    • Friday 8/26: Educational opportunities with iSEE
    1. Urbana Park District's Climate Action Week 2022 will be held throughout next week, August 22-28. Daily events include tours, hiking and lunch & learns.     2. iSEE’s TED Talk: Eco-Edition series: Kick start your commitment to sustainability this academic year on Wednesday, August 31 from 7-8 PM. This month’s Zoom Ted Talk event is hosted by the four co-presidents of the Student Sustainability Leadership Council (SSLC): Jack Reicherts, Danika Ford, Owen Jennings, and Maiah Caise. We will watch a pre-recorded TED Talk followed by a guided, thought-provoking discussion. The discussion will highlight environmental activism and how to get involved in environmental initiatives on campus. All are welcome, whether near or far! Register here.

  7. Weekly Update: Student rush, Very high demand for sale bikes

    All, The student rush looms this week. We won’t nearly be able to meet demand for sale bikes, nor for helping with DIY repairs with our current staffing levels but we’ll soldier on. I’ve got a couple interviews lined up this week to help on that front and at least one bike donated over the weekend to help with our sales.

    The numbers:

    Bikes (refurb): 5 for $1,080
    Memberships: 9 for $270
    Tires/tubes: 17 for $91

  8. Inventory of all impounded bicycles

    Phase 3 of the project was to inventory all the bicycles at Round Barn. With the help of Nathaniel Nevins and Sathish Ravipatti, Sarthak Prasad finished the inventory of all the impounded bicycles by August 15, 2022.

    Sarthak Prasad spent nearly 50 hours during the tagging, confirming, and inventorying phases of this project.
