  2. Archived Info - Project Description

    Associated Project(s):

    The Transportation iCAP Team is a team of faculty, staff and students who work to advance the 2015 iCAP transportation objectives. The team forms recommendations to reduce the 10% of campus emissions which are attributable to transportation. We address air travel emissions, fleet emissions, single-occupancy vehicle usage, renewable fuels, and active transportation.

    Based on FY14 data, transportation emissions have increased by 30% since the FY08 baseline.  Because emissions from the fleet and commuting are down by three and six percent, respectively, the increase in total transportation emissions is entirely due to a 52% increase in air travel emissions relative to FY08.

    Hi Morgan,

    Yes. I plan to continue.

    We will have a draft Biodiversity Plan to share with the resilience team when it is convenient. I need to review the recommendations that Gabe has pulled together. There is more introductory text and maps to written and made. Gabe wants to keep working on the plan as part of his grad school work so we will probably wait to call it done this time next year. But I do want to get feedback from the committee at some point.

    1. Urbana Park District's Climate Action Week 2022 will be held throughout next week, August 22-28. Daily events include tours, hiking and lunch & learns. The week will culminate in a main event at Crystal Lake Park on Saturday, August 27, from 1 PM-4 PM. Click the title link to learn more about UPD's Green Initiatives and Programs.

    2. iSEE’s TED Talk: Eco-Edition series: Kick start your commitment to sustainability this academic year on Wednesday, August 31 from 7-8 PM. This month’s Zoom Ted Talk event is hosted by the four co-presidents of the Student Sustainability Leadership Council (SSLC): Jack Reicherts, Danika Ford, Owen Jennings, and Maiah Caise. We will watch a pre-recorded TED Talk followed by a guided, thought-provoking discussion. The discussion will highlight environmental activism and how to get involved in environmental initiatives on campus. All are welcome, whether near or far! Register here.

    Have you signed up for the iSEE newsletter yet? This is the best way to stay up-to-date on all things sustainability. Let me know if you have any questions, and see you soon!

  5. Weekly Update: Student rush, Very high demand for sale bikes

    Associated Project(s):

    All, The student rush looms this week. We won’t nearly be able to meet demand for sale bikes, nor for helping with DIY repairs with our current staffing levels but we’ll soldier on. I’ve got a couple interviews lined up this week to help on that front and at least one bike donated over the weekend to help with our sales.

    The numbers:

    Visitors: 28

    Sales: $1,742.50
    Bikes (refurb): 5 for $1,080
    Memberships: 9 for $270
    Tires/tubes: 17 for $91

    Thanks!

    Jacob Benjamin
    Campus Bike Center Coordinator

  6. Inventory of all impounded bicycles

    Phase 3 of the project was to inventory all the bicycles at Round Barn. With the help of Nathaniel Nevins and Sathish Ravipatti, Sarthak Prasad finished the inventory of all the impounded bicycles by August 15, 2022.

    Sarthak Prasad spent nearly 50 hours during the tagging, confirming, and inventorying phases of this project.

  7. iCAP Portal Admin Meeting - August 12, 2022

    Associated Project(s):

    Michael showed updates to the iCAP Portal:

    • It's safe to delete Collections; tested on dev to confirm it doesn't break anything.
    • Project Collection page: fixed bug where project hierarchy showed all Collections for each project rather than only current Collection.
    • Create project page: fixed bug where input fields were overflowing their containers in Firefox.
    • The Projects by Project Status listing now allows you to select how many projects to view at a time, including All. There is also a “Download list of projects as CSV file” link below the listing, which includes the URL as its own column, since CSV files can’t include clickable links.

    TODOs:

    • Theme pages (e.g. Dev site Energy theme page)
      • Padding between Project Hierarchy & Other Projects
      • Make description collapsible
      • Move to live site once other changes completed
    • Project Header Layout (e.g. LEED Certification project)
      • Add padding below header image
    • Project Creation/Update page
      • Add checkboxes for "Make ____ field collapsible" for each textarea (Description, Background, Conclusion)
  8. 2022 Freezer Challenge Results

    Associated Project(s):

    From: Foote, Gerard Paul <gfoote2 at illinois.edu>
    Sent: Friday, August 12, 2022 4:01 PM

    Subject: Urgent poll for photo shoot & 2022 Freezer Challenge results

    Hello Everyone,

    Congratulations, on another world-class performance and international recognition in the 2022 International Freezer Challenge!

    You have reduced over 290,000 kWh’s annually, an energy cost savings of over $25,500, which is our second highest results since participating in this competition and has earned the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign an Honorable Mention in the 2022 Freezer Challenge!

    Yes, I know this is not the same as first place or even the innovative Winning Streak Award that we helped create, but it is a testament to our world-class example and leadership in sustainable laboratory practices in research sample cold-storage management.

    Most importantly, your continued efforts, participation and documenting these lab practices reflects efficient adoption and implementation of sustainable laboratory practices that have long lasting impacts once incorporated into the labs day-to-day operations.

    On a side note: My competitive side suspects that we once again may have outperformed or at least participated in the top tier of participating universities worldwide, more follow up to come.

    Please add your availability in this When2Meet calendar: https://www.when2meet.com/?16378891-ETV5Z  by August 19th 2022 deadline?

    FYI- The overall impacts are still being accumulated and will be shared in a campus wide media release and mass email.

    The rules now state we are only able to be recognized for 1st place or the Winning Streak Award if previous winners surpass their previous year’s energy savings calculations and while we achieved are second highest reductions to date, overall it was not higher than last year’s reductions of over 383,000 kWh’s.

    Thank you

  9. Water bottle filling stations in state-supported facilities

    Associated Project(s):

    Per the request of Morgan White on 6/28/22, Building Service Workers under F&S Transportation and Building Services completed an inventory of water bottle filling stations in state-supported facilities on 8/11/22. Attached is the data. This was based on a recommendation from the iCAP Zero Waste Team to better understand the infrastructure of water bottle filling stations on campus. If iSEE/F&S can identify where stations are lacking, more stations could be added. The purpose of the inventory is to decrease single-use plastic water bottle use on campus.

    Subject: "Let's Talk about Sustainability" event agenda

    Hi all,

    We now have confirmation for the “Let’s Talk about Sustainability” event agenda. As a reminder, this will be held each morning (10-11AM) in the South Lounge of the Union during the first week of the semester (August 22-27).

    Monday 8/22 – Meet iSEE/iCAP with sustainability staff

    Tuesday 8/23 – Plastic reduction with ISTC

    Wednesday 8/24 – Student involvement with SSLC/SECS/SSC

    Thursday 8/25 – Sustainable transportation (learn how to register your bike, take the bus, etc) with F&S and Bike Center

    Friday 8/26 – Educational opportunities with iSEE

    The purpose is to welcome students to campus, help them learn more about sustainability efforts on campus and in the community, and engage them in panel discussions on specific topics. Each morning, there will be a brief presentations (10-15 minutes) about a topic by a subject-matter expert, followed by open discussion and questions from attendees. They are not meant to be very formal but instead to spark the curiosity and interest of students and staff, particularly those who are new to campus, and help them find ways to become involved in advocacy and a local culture of sustainability. This event is open to all!

    The Communications Team is in the process of creating a Facebook event for the event; it will also be advertised in the iSEE newsletter next week, EWeek/iNews/GradLinks, and at the Welcome Celebration. Please help advertise the event in your circles as well and let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

    Thank you!
    Meredith

  12. Inquiry about SSC Micro Grants

    Sarthak Prasad reached out to Jack Reicherts to ask if SSC awards micro grants.

    Jack replied with the message below,

    Hi Sarthak,

    In the interest of streamlining things, I think we got rid of microgrants as of a year and a half ago or so. We still do student-led under $10k projects on a rolling basis, but everything else still goes through the normal 2-step process. If you ever need to connect with interested students, I’m happy to plug potential projects on our Discord server!

    Best,

    Jack

  13. Weekly Update: Refurbished bicycles, Abandoned bikes

    All, We’re quickly approaching zero stock for refurbished bikes. One particularly eager patron bought two of our more expensive road bikes back-to-back last week. Thankfully, we received 3 bikes in very-good-to-great condition that should—fingers crossed—be on the sales floor for Wednesday.

    We’re in the beginning stages of clearing out abandoned bikes. Approximately 200 will go to CBC/TBP so that’ll help our inventory. The abandoned bikes at the rack in front of the bike center were cut this morning, cleaning up and clearing space for folks to lock there. We’ll be better able to see if any donations have been left, as well.

    The numbers:

    Visitors: 21
    Sales: $1,646.75
    Bikes (refurb): 3 for $1,025
    B-a-B: 1 for $50
    Tires/tubes: 15 for $113

    Thanks!

    Jacob Benjamin
    Campus Bike Center Coordinator
